BOOK LAUNCH following the screening of Burma Storybook.
Pity the poor Burmese censor. Under the military dictators who ruled Burma for nearly half a century, his job was to scrutinize any and all material that went into print, from magazine articles and reports to novels, song lyrics, and poems. Reading Burma Storybook, you will see that, of all the forms the written word can take, the one the censor found most challenging was poetry.
Burma Storybook is a tribute to the long poetry tradition in Myanmar and is made up of poetry by the poets we follow in the film Burma Storybook. Accompanied by photographs by Dutch photographer Dana Lixenberg, the book also contains biographical interviews with the poets.
After the screening of the film, director Petr Lom will talk about the making of the film, the Burmese poets we encounter and the resulting book.
